Is Sushi Raw?

Is sushi raw?

This is a question I have had for years. I am not afraid to admit that I was skeptical about trying it. At 23 years old, strange foods still scare me. While at an Asian restaurant two nights ago, my husband finally convinced me to take the leap.

But first, I must also admit I did my research. Why? Because I was not too fond of the idea of consuming raw fish. The results were very satisfying! Here is what I found:

Sushi MAY CONTAIN raw fish, however, sushi is NOT raw fish.

Let me say it louder for those in the back- “SUSHI IS NOT RAW FISH.”

“Whew.” Did you breathe a sigh of relief?

In my research, I found that sashimi (a raw, thinly-sliced fish delicacy often served in Japan or Japanese restaurants) is often confused with sushi. While sashimi might be an ingredient in some sushi rolls, it is not an ingredient in every sushi roll. Most westernized sushi dishes consist of vinegared rice, seaweed wraps, and some type of cooked meat (i.e. tuna, salmon, crab). This particular roll I tried featured cooked crab meat, but also included cucumber pieces and a slice of avocado on top.

Now for the verdict…

I was not a fan of sushi. (***Audible sushi lover gasp)

I know, I know. My husband was disappointed in me, as well. Perhaps, for me, it was the texture. The seaweed and rice combination seemed slimy to me. I am not saying I would never try it again (possibly it was just the way the restaurant prepared the dish), nevertheless, I do not believe I will be busting down the doors to my local Japanese restaurant for their makizushi lunch special anytime soon.

Sincerely,

Not a sushi lover
