Remi’s Big Girl Room

Heyo! Happy Friday, happy March, and happy (almost) spring. In the Richardson household, we have been taking this season to refresh several different rooms and spaces. One of those spaces was Remi’s room. When we first moved into this house two years ago, I was six months pregnant with Remi. Her nursery was the first room we renovated because we knew it had to be done fast. That being said, it was in desperate need of a refresh. It still felt very infant-ish (I just made that word up), and it was time to transition to a big girl bed.

I struggled with this transition because, as a mom, it means my little girl is getting older. Specifically, the transition from a crib to a big girl bed was very hard for me to deal with. She, on the other hand, has handled it like a champ. She slept through the first night in her big girl bed without even getting up and has done well ever since!

This refresh was as much about creating excitement as it was necessary. Her room didn’t just need a refresh, SHE needed a refresh. She needed to feel the excitement about her new big girl room so that she could feel at home in this new space. We let her help put together her new bed, hang shelves, and rearrange her toys/books. Involving her in this process helped create a sense of ownership. She was so excited to spend the first night in her “big girl room” that there was no bribery needed.

The biggest deal for me (aside from setting up her new big girl bed) was creating a little reading nook for her to curl up and read her books. She definitely takes after her mama in that she loves to read. She has quite the collection of books already, so we turned those into a sort of functional decor by lining the top shelf around the room with them. We also installed some bookshelves on her eye level to house all of her most-read board books. I then added the mini egg chair to the corner adjacent to her bed for her to have a designated reading space. The large, vintage velvet blue chair just wasn’t cutting it anymore, because she is Miss Independent and doesn’t want to be held.

Adding pegs around the room allowed me to hang some extra doodads/decor, and the ‘new’ dresser is actually my old dresser which I passed down to her. We also reused the wall art, the bedding, and even the rug that was already in her room. This project was done on a budget, and I’m not afraid to admit it! I think the total cost was less than $100 because we reused so many items. The biggest purchase was the paint, which I LOVE, by the way.

Choosing the paint color was quite the adventure. I went back and forth between a Sherwin Williams color and a Behr color, but in the end, I did not even choose one of the original options. I ended up with “Spiced Brandy” by Behr, and I am absolutely obsessed. This color gave the space the warmth it needed and It looks even better in person than in photos.
